Finished the story, love this game.

My thoughts here are Spoiler Free, but if you want, I can chat in the comments.

First and foremost, I have to talk about the actual game itself before giving my input on the story. It's a simple delivery game with science fiction horror and I loved every single second of it. The gameplay was challenging in a good way where it makes you think on your feet on how to deliver something, how to protect your packages, & how to stay away from BTs. Everything from the art design, character design, sound design, etc. is done incredibly well. The game itself is a very relaxing experience at times, it's just you and the scenery. It's simple and it's very effective. I've gushed about the gameplay enough, now I'll move on to my thoughts on the story. As a concept, the story of a post apocalyptic delivery man has been done before (i.e. Kevin Costner's The Postman). However, where this game diverges from that simple premise is that it takes a huge amount of time explaining the world, introducing unique characters, and pushing its concepts to the fullest extent. I've never seen a futuristic world like Death Stranding's UCA, and the fact that it stands on its own is a real testament to the whole team crafting this vision. I love the characters a lot, and there are really satisfying pay offs for everything set up. The twists were genuinely surprising (except maybe one) and the story as a science fiction concept is fascinating. The overall message of Unity (and to an extent non-violence) is so refreshing in a science fiction that it made a very nice change of pace. I started the game all the way back when it was first released, but every now and then I'd take breaks in order to enjoy the game slowly. The last thing I wanted to do is just rush through it. However, there was a certain point in the story where I just couldn't stop playing and that's how I wound up here. If there's any issues I have, I would say that the ending drags a little. Now the ending itself is amazing, but it felt weirdly paced. Overall, I loved this game, and I think that the story is a unique look at a post apocalypse.

So, I guess I'll start finishing up my five star connections....looking forward to it.

Can't help but feel like Ankha wearing my porter sweater is a betrayal to Higgs, despite the colour-coding being near damn perfect.

Is it weird that I just beat the game and immediately want to start a new playthrough?

For some reason I never got this game until it was on sale a few weeks ago. This has been probably my favorite gaming experience since Mass Effect 2. I don't know why the game didn't pique my interest originally, but god damn this game is great. This isn't ignoring the fact that I spent hours falling down mountains trying to climb or having my truck lose traction and go tumbling down a hill because I hit a 2 inch rock. Even with the irritations that come with certain aspects of the game (Some of the worst driving mechanics I've ever seen) it was still so insanely good I can't stop thinking about it.

That was it. Just wanted to gush because I feel like I missed the hype train on this game.

More news about the PC release next month. I don't even own a PC, but I'm excited at any possibility of the PC release bringing new content for the PS4 version.

[Episode 6] Early episode thoughts on the differences...

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:58 PM PDT

My god this game is different without BB. It's incredible how many different ways this game is subversive -- Sam, the protagonist of our game, isn't quite the Action Man we know him to be without the help of a stillborn purgatory baby, or BB. It's amazing to think about it. Kojima really double downed in every way on the idea that we all rely on others and need help and cooperation from one another to make it in life.

Second, did anyone else spend a great chunk of time hunting BTs blind? It was terrifying at first, but now I find it exhilarating. The sounds they make, previously drowned out by the odradek, are fascinating. Animalistic growls the closer you get, and what sounds like the din of a crowd of people when you're just lurking in a BT area. It feels somber and mournful, like the sounds of so many ghosts echoing their previous lives.

But again, so terrifying! I played with headphones on through the BT areas and every growl made me shiver. I started to mourn PT all over again.

Freaked me out the first time I got a like from a BT. Then I realized cord-cutting by surprise is probably the most humane way of sending them back to the land of the dead (or a Beach? Still not clear about Beaches but too afraid of spoilers to Google it), so it probably puts their souls at ease.

All in all I'm really enjoying this amazing game as it continues to evolve. No BB, terrorists instead of MULEs, and a truly invisible enemy. It softens the depressing note Episode 5 ended on.

Did anyone else have as much fun going it solo? I'm afraid I'm going to spend too much time hunting (I DO need chiral crystals) and end up finishing this chapter very late... I dont mind, I've sunk 168 hours just going at my pace, doing deliveries and building slowly, and enjoying this wonderful world. I'm so glad I took a chance on this game, all the little things combined with the unmissable symbolism and allegories are thoroughly enjoyable.

EDIT Also, made me respect pre-Bridges Sam a hell of a lot more. I don't know how he did his deliveries without BB, especially on a noisy reverse trike!

The significance of calling the scanner 'Odradek'

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:07 PM PDT

I dunno if this has already been talked about, but I think it's possible that the reference to Franz Kafka's short story is in the game is because an Odradek is what happens to an object when it's really dead.

Objects aren't alive, because they're inanimate, which basically means they're immortal. An object can be broken so that it does not perform it's function, but that doesn't really make it dead.

An Odradek, however, seems to be an object that has no purpose at all anymore. It has degraded beyond all recognition into complete ambiguity, so that no-one knows what it was used for.

That sort of makes it a 'dead' object. Perhaps that's the connection. The only way an object can be dead is by becoming something like an Odradek. Therefore, it's sort of like BB, it's associated strongly with the other side.
