Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST I've seen people expressing disappointment in Higgs as a villain, saying that he's not given enough character depth on screen, or just that his motivation was dull/lacking/etc. Personally, I liked his presentation as an over the top "typical" videogame villain, and found that the additional materials (interviews, secret room) gave context for his actions and the way he acts in a thoughtful and intriguing way. It was fun to feel like I earned and discovered this information on my own, rather than just being hit with a 10 minute expository cutscene. I love that he's given the "final boss battle" treatment, yet the game continues for quite a while after fighting him... because, to sum up the whole experience with a macho brawl would have gone against everything the game stands for. Instead, we are presented with it and given a chance to dissect the very concept of a final boss, all within the context of the larger narrative. As a character, Higgs is like the embodiment of nihilism- "we're all gonna die anyway, so let's just get it over with", whereas Sam's journey is more about learning to find hope- the revelation being that "yes, we're all going to die, but we should make the most of the time we do have." Two sides of the same coin. Two ways of viewing our inevitable end. Once you read through his journals, you find that Higgs, like Sam, had been searching for meaning. When he meets Amelie and learns of her mission, he chooses to dedicate himself to her cause of bringing about the sixth extinction. It even feels like, near the end, he wants this to happen more than she does. He's finally found his own purpose, something to dedicate himself to. He refuses to stray from that path because he thinks if he were to admit he was wrong, it would mean, to him at least, that his life truly was meaningless. So instead he embraces it, loudly and proudly, hence why he acts so over the top compared to everyone else. He's compensating for the fact that even he kind of knows he's full of shit. Anyway, just wanted to share these thoughts and am curious what other people think of Higgs! Keep on keeping on 👍👍👍 [link] [comments] | ||

Interesting relation to Snatcher Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:35 PM PST I started Snatcher and an interesting (somewhat silly) thought came to me: in Death Stranding people wear metal skulls as masks. In Snatcher metal skulls wear people's faces as masks. [link] [comments] |
