Hideo Kojima...Honestly, how in the world did he do this? Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:39 PM PDT With MGS being literally the greatest series of video games in the history of video games (IMO) I was so excited for Death Stranding. It was the bastion of light in the dark disappointment following Hideo's departure from Konami and Silent Hills being cancelled (hopefully temporarily) The trailer. God DAMN that 1st trailer. I don't think I've ever felt that enthralled in a video game trailer, maybe 2nd only to Halo 3's "Believe" trailer, but that wasn't really mysterious. Everyone knows Halo. Master Chief goes "shoot shoot," aliens go "garble garble," and Cortana makes me wonder if it's weird to want to do sexual things with a hologram. But Death Stranding? Normal Reedus naked on a beach with what looks to be a crude C-Section scar, cradling a baby, only to have it turn to an invisible black liquid baby. Then the camera pans up to 5 floating black figures in the distance, and the title of the game shows up and even the title doesn't make sense. How did they manage to release such massive amount of trailer footage in the lead up to the game, yet still completely avoid even dipping into the the meaning of everything. Then it dropped. Mixed reviews everywhere. I didn't think I would ever see an original IP from someone like Kojima get such an average score. I didn't buy it for this reason. Everyone was telling me it's dumb and "bro it's just a walking simulator how can that even be fun." Even when the bad reviews started coming in saying it was a walking simulator, I was extremely skeptical of them. I mean, obviously with the gameplay teaser and the actual gameplay once it launched, it looked like the reviews were spot on. But it's Hideo Kojima. Him making a game as basic as what people were claiming? Nah. I knew there was a lot more to the game. So I bought it when it came out on Steam. And yes. The reviews were right, mostly. So much of the game is just walking. That's it. Walking. Sometimes you trip, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you sit, sometimes you pee, sometimes you spend an hour in photo mode and forget what the hell you were doing before you started taking pictures. And it's fucking amazing. How did he do it, guys? Honestly. How the fuck did he sculpt the atmosphere so perfectly that literally just walking in the middle of nowhere is thoroughly enjoyable. What elements do you think are at play here that make it work so well? Very early in the game, I believe before I even got to the second outpost, I was just walking for a few minutes after leaving the main outpost. All of a sudden, the camera starts to zoom out. More of the world comes into frame and you get a stark realization of just how alone you are, and how vast this world actually is. Then you see some white text fade in. It's a song by Low Roar, a band/musician I've never heard of before. And the music fades in slowly. Your senses are just overloaded with a feeling of wonder and awe. I've never, in my entire life, experienced the feeling I got from this moment in any other game. [link] [comments] | ||
